GRINSPOON SPIRIT AWARD WINNERS SPAN THE GLOBE
What do a clothing designer from Bermuda, a Jamaican jewelry weaver, a business student from the former Soviet Union and a ceramic designer from Vermont have in common with a food service proprietor from Northampton, a Southwick mason and a Springfield bus driver?
They are the first area college students to be recognized for their entrepreneurial spirit by the Grinspoon Charitable Foundation Entrepreneurship Initiative for the academic year 2007-08. This year’s banquet will be held on Tuesday, April 15th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke.
Roy-Allan Burch from Bermuda launched Wonder Effect, a socially conscious clothing line, while a student at Springfield College.
Stacianne Tennant from Jamaica and Nana Karabedian from Georgia in the former Soviet Union met as classmates at Bay Path College. They recently started Number One, offering handcrafted jewelry and accessories.
Jennifer Sochin Connor from Vermont created a line of ceramic keepsakes for her company Jennie Blue while studying at Smith College.
Jessica Harwood, recent Smith alum, founded FEAST (Farm-Fresh, Environmental and Sustainable Sustenance) a local food delivery service based in Northampton.
Kyle Sanders of Southwick took over Sanders’ Masonry from his grandfather William Sanders while studying entrepreneurship at Springfield Technical Community College.
Ray Gadiel Hernandez operates JuJu’s Transportation offering school transportation services from his office in the Student Business Incubator at the Scibelli Enterprise Center at STCC.
Additional Spirit Award winners will be named shortly. In the 2006-2007 academic year, Mr. Harold Grinspoon, through the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative, recognized over 30 students attending colleges and universities in the Pioneer Valley for demonstrating the “entrepreneurial spirit”. Individual awards ranged from $500 to $3,800.
In addition to Springfield College, Bay Path College, Smith College and Springfield Technical Community College, other participating institutions include: American International College, Elms College, Greenfield Community College, Hampshire College, Holyoke Community College, Mt. Holyoke College, University of Massachusetts, Western New England College and Westfield State College.

GRINSPOON INITIATIVE RECOGNIZES STCC STUDENTS
Three STCC students have been recognized for their business accomplishments by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurial Initiative. Gail Olmsted, Faculty Advisor and Assistant Professor at STCC announced recently that three Spirit Award winners were chosen for the 2007-08 academic year.
Ray Gladiel Hernandez of Springfield runs JuJu's Transportation from his office in the Student Business Incubator in the Scibelli Enterprise Center at STCC. Ray is a member of the Massachusetts Latino Chamber of Commerce. JuJu's Transportation has been in operation since September of 2007.
Kyle Sanders grew up in Southwick and graduated from Southwick High School in 2007. He recently took over Sanders Masonry from his grandfather William who started the business more than 50 years ago. Kyle is currently studying Entrepreneurship at STCC. He began working in the masonry business at the age of 6.
Alexander (Sacha) Wing grew up in Wilbraham and graduated from Minnechaug High School. He has always dreamed of becoming an architect and owning his own design firm. He started Wing Home Improvements in April of 2005 and will graduate from STCC with a degree in Architectural Design next May.
Hernandez, Sanders, and Wing will be among the thirty or so area college students recognized at this year’s Entrepreneurial Initiative banquet which will be held on April 15th at the Log Cabin in Holyoke. They will share in an award pool of nearly sixty thousand dollars.

BAY PATH STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
The Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative announced recently that three additional Bay Path College students will be among those honored for their entrepreneurial spirit at the annual banquet to be held on April 15th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke.
Kathleen Milazzo Swahn of Glastonbury, CT is an MBA student. Her company is
Swahn Engraving, LLC, an engraving and imaging company providing awards, recognition and identification for a variety of industries and markets.
Strachan Boolukos of Rhinebeck, NY and Chrissy Soto of Waterbury, CT are undergraduate students at Bay Path College. Their company, CAMPUS COOKIES, was designed to fill a real need that the two women identified- the lack of quality food after-hours. CAMPUS COOKIES will deliver warm home-baked cookies during late night study hours. Orders can be placed in advance or selections can be made from that night’s inventory. They will also offer holiday packages and special care packages during exam time.
Bay Path students who had been named by the Grinspoon Foundation earlier this year will be honored at the banquet as well. They are: Christina DiMeo, Nana Kharabedia, Judith Merriman and Stacianne Tennant.

HCC STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
Nine students at Holyoke Community College have been recognized for demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative. They will be among the students honored at their annual banquet to be held on April 15th at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA. They are: Anthony Bernal of Ludlow, Sawna Caradwyn of Leverett, Gregory Chartier of Belchertown, April Grant of Northampton, Daniel Kane of Granby, Michael Kopyscinski of West Springfield, Robert Mangels of South Hadley, Jeremiah Micka of Easthampton, and Laura Mowry of South Deerfield.
52 students attending colleges and universities in the Pioneer Valley have been recognized this year by the Grinspoon Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Initiative for demonstrating the “entrepreneurial spirit”. Individual awards have ranged from $500 to $3,000.
